Intro
In 2010, Montague introduced a pavement or road
bike line of 700c folding bikes. Based upon an earlier
mountain bike design with 26" wheels and dual
top tubes, the top tubes of these new road bikes had
a gentle arc built in to accommodate 700c wheels;
however, the new design had an added benefit; it absorbed
road shock too.
Since a wider variety of components (hubs, rims, brakesets, etc.) are available for 700c, the road bike line offered more opportunities for riders to customize their new bikes. Yet, it soon became clear that a number of riders wanted something badly - an internally geared, multi speed hub. This is what led to the Boston 8.
The Boston 8 is a 700c folding bike that's similar in appearance to the Boston 1. The main difference is that the Boston 8 is outfitted with a Shimano Nexus 8 speed internal hub (the Boston 1 has a single speed/fixie flip flop hub setup). The internally geared Nexus hub allows gear changes whether moving or stopped. Additionally, since there is no rear derailleur or external cassette, far less maintenance is needed and the chain won't fall off or get wedged into the spokes. The Boston 8 also has a chain guard so you can ride in street clothes without your pants leg getting dirty.
The combination of multiple speeds and the absence of a rear derailleur make this 700c folding bicycle the best suited full size folding bike for urban riding.
